The AirAbrasion technique is a non-invasive, comfortable, virtually silent form of dentistry. For certain cavities, particularly the ones discovered early, our air abrasion system allows us to remove the decay without the need for drilling. AirAbrasion literally “wipes” decay away with a gentle stream of concentrated air and a mild abrasive. For small- to medium-sized cavities, this technique is very effective. Often air abrasion removes so little of the tooth that the filling is extremely small. The cavity is filled with a tooth-colored composite filling that bonds to the tooth, offering strength, longevity and virtual invisibility. Air Abrasion can also be used for repairing work, shipped or fractured teeth, removing stains from teeth, preparing old fillings for new composite materials, repairing broken crowns and bridges, and preparing teeth for veneers or other cosmetic work
No more visions of Dr. Frankenstein at the dentist’s office! Air abrasion dentistry alleviates the need for just about all of the things you had nightmares about as a kid – the noise, the odor, the vibration and, worst of all, the shot. New technologies insure that you can avoid the apprehension many of us have experienced over years of visits to the dentist. And no pain means no anxiety.
Air abrasion is very safe, too – it can be used on small children and pregnant women. Anesthetic is needed only in rare cases where a little pain might be experienced. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll see the wisdom of regular checkups – problems caught early are easy to treat, and you can say goodbye to the drill!
The Air Abrasion Process
First we apply a small amount of cavity detection dye to locate even the slightest amount of decay. As long as the decay is not located under an earlier amalgam filling or deep into the tooth or gum, we can then use air abrasion to direct a microfine stream of compressed air and abrasive powder onto the decay, blasting it away. We then bond a natural tooth-colored material into the small cavity. The whole procedure will often take less than 15 minutes!
